Bringing a virtual material into real life - 8k Marble - Vermont Verde Antique

I made this material for our studio to use as an alternative to purchasing around $30000 worth of Vermont Verde Antique marble slabs for a shower space that was only going to be in a shot for a few seconds. It was printed on 4ft x 8ft resin slabs that were cut and tiled into the set.

Rather than scour the internet for an image of this particular marble that could cover 12+ square feet of space, I created this generator that produces 8ft x 8ft slabs of Vermont Verde Antique marble in 8k resolution. Using a method of edge detection, flood fills, and vector warps in Substance Designer, I was able to create a highly detailed and accurate representation of the marble with infinite variations!

This was the first Substance Designer material our studio has used on set, and hopefully I will get the chance to work on more projects where we bring our virtual materials to real life. With versatility like this, Substance Designer is quickly becoming the most useful tool in our workflow!
